We had only been in our new house for a little over three months when this happened. One night, I was playing video games on the computer when I suddenly heard my younger siblings arguing in the hallway. At first, I ignored them because this was normal for them, especially when they were getting ready for school. They always fought over who got to use the bathroom first, sometimes just for the sake of arguing. I was so into my game that I didn’t notice it was still dark outside. Since my siblings were up, I figured it must already be early morning.
I tried to keep playing, but their voices got louder as they came closer to my room. When they were right outside my door, I suddenly heard my mom yell in Hmong, “WHAT ARE YOU DOING UP? GO TO SLEEP NOW!” That made me even more annoyed, since they were being so loud that my mom had to step in. I got up, angry, and went straight to the door to confront them. But when I opened it, no one was there. The hallway was completely dark, and there was no sign of anyone being awake.
I stood at the door, shocked that no one was in the hallway. I was sure I had heard my siblings and my mom, but they were gone. Fear took over, and I didn’t know what to do. My heart was pounding, and I kept telling myself to run, but I couldn’t move. It was only a few seconds, but it felt like forever.
It wasn’t until I heard one of my older brothers, who was asleep in the same room, wake up to use the bathroom that I was finally able to move again. As he got out of bed and walked past me to the bathroom, I took that chance to run over to the computer, turn it off, and run back to my bed. Then I checked the clock and realized that it was only 3 a.m.
The next morning, I told my parents what happened. They thought it was because I stayed up late playing video games and said I had upset something in the house. They scolded me, told me to stop staying up so late, and warned me it could happen again if I didn’t listen. Of course, I ignored their warning and ended up having more strange experiences for years after.
